Narrow Ξ - π ± and Ξ + π ± resonances produced by quasi-real photons have been searched for by the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The study was stimulated by the recent observation of an exotic baryonic state decaying into Ξ - π + , at a mass of 1862 MeV, interpreted as a pentaquark. While the ordinary hyperon states Ξ (1530) 0 and Ξ(1530) 0 are clearly seen, no exotic baryon is observed in the data taken in 2002 and 2003. © Springer-Verlag / Società Italiana di Fisica 2005.

First measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries of charged hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on a transversely polarized LiD6 target are presented. The data were taken in 2002 with the COMPASS spectrometer using the muon beam of the CERN SPS at 160GeV/c. The Collins asymmetry turns out to be compatible with zero, as does the measured Sivers asymmetry within the present statistical errors. © 2005 The American Physical Society.

We present a new measurement of the longitudinal spin asymmetry A 1 d and the spin-dependent structure function g 1 d of the deuteron in the range 1 < Q 2 < 100 GeV 2 and 0.004 < x < 0.7. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV polarised muon beam and a large polarised 6 LiD target. The results are in agreement with those from previous experiments and improve considerably the statistical accuracy in the region 0.004 < x < 0.03. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The spin structure of the nucleons is investigated by studying spin dependent process of deep inelastic scattering of a polarized muon beam and a polarized nucleon target in the COMPASS experiment since 2001. In order to achieve high luminosities it is necessary to use a large solid polarized target. The target consists of two independent and oppositely longitudinal polarized cells. The cells are filled with irradiated 6LiD granulated material. One of the characteristics of the polarized target is the spin reversal by magnetic field rotation in order to cancel the systematic error. The polarized target apparatus consists of a large refrigerator providing a low temperature of below 100 mK and a high cooling power with 200-300 mK, a superconducting magnet producing 2.5 T with good field homogeneity, two high power of a few watts microwave systems producing 70 GHz for Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) and 10NMR signals detection system for the polarization measurement.

A high-quality double-polarization data set for the helicity dependence of the total and differential cross-sections for both γp → Nπ channels in the Δ region has been obtained in the framework of the GDH experiment. The experiment, performed at the Mainz microtron MAMI, used a 4π detection system, a circularly polarized photon beam, and a longitudinally polarized frozen-spin target. These data are included in the database to perform a multipole analysis to determine the properties of the Δ(1232)- resonance. For the resonant Δ(1232) multipoles we find a very good agreement with previous analyses, while the nonresonant ones show significant deviations.

We present a measurement of the longitudinal spin cross section asymmetry for deep-inelastic muon-nucleon interactions with two high transverse momentum hadrons in the final state. Two methods of event classification are used to increase the contribution of the photon-gluon fusion process to above 30%. The most effective one, based on a neural network approach, provides the asymmetries A p ℓN→ℓhhX =0.030±0.057(stat)±0. 010(syst) and A d ℓN→ℓhhX =0.070±0. 076(stat)±0.010(syst). From these values we derive an averaged gluon polarization ΔG/G=-0.20±0.28(stat)±0.10(syst) at an average fraction of nucleon momentum carried by gluons 〈η〉 = 0.07.

The dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) of 6 LiD requires 1 mW/g or more microwave power in the beginning of the process. With the material of 350 g, this gives more than 350 mW in total for the COMPASS polarized target. A temperature around 300 mK or below is needed for an efficient polarization. These low temperatures can only be achieved with a dilution refrigerator designed to operate with a 3 He flow of 100 mmol/s. In order to keep the polarization in the frozen mode, temperatures of about 65 mK are used with typical magnetic relaxation times of more than 1400 h at 0.42 T and of more than 15000 h at 2.5 T. Low lattice temperature is important in achieving high nuclear polarization. The base temperature is limited by the heat brought to the mixing chamber by the inlet 3 He and by radiation and conduction of heat. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A polarized deuterium target was developed for the use of the first measurement of the so-called complete spin dependent cross-sections of the D→(d→,p)T nuclear reaction at 20 MeV. In order to minimize the energy losses of incident and emitted particles in the target materials, the target thickness should be as thin as possible. A deuterated polyethylene foil of 30-50 μm thickness was used as polarized target. The deuterons contained in the foil are polarized by the dynamic nuclear polarization method in the magnetic field of 2.5 T. The polarized deuterium target system has been installed in the 1st experimental hall of the Tandem Accelerator Center at the University of Tsukuba. From the target asymmetry measurement of D→(d,d)D elastic scattering by a 20 MeV deuteron beam about 10% deuteron target polarization was confirmed. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Continuous wave nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is used to determine the target polarization in the COMPASS experiment. The system is made of the so-called Liverpool Q-meters, Yale-cards, and VME modules for data taking and system controlling. In 2001 the NMR coils were embedded in the target material, while in 2002 and 2003 the coils were mounted on the outer surface of the target cells to increase the packing factor of the material. Though the error of the measurement became larger with the outer coils than with the inner coils, we have performed stable measurements throughout the COMPASS run time for 3 years. The maximum polarization was +57% and -53% as the average in the target cells. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
