A small position-sensitive counter with a single resistive anode wire was constructed for use in a double-crystal X-ray spectrometer system. Using this position detector we have measured Kα doublet X-rays in the positions of which are very close together and obtained the two corresponding rocking curves simultaneously, to determine the lattice constant differences in various crystals.

We report a large enhancement of 1.7 in deuteron polarization up to values of 0.6 due to frequency modulation of the polarizing microwaves in a two liter polarized target using the method of dynamic nuclear polarization. This target was used during a deep inelastic polarized muon-deuteron scattering experiment at CERN. Measurements of the electron paramagnetic resonance absorption spectra show that frequency modulation gives rise to additional microwave absorption in the spectral wings. Although these results are not understood theoretically, they may provide a useful testing ground for the deeper understanding of dynamic nuclear polarization.

We present a measurement of semi-inclusive spin asymmetries for positively and negatively charged hadrons from deep inelastic scattering of polarised muons on polarised protons and deuterons in the range 0.003 < x < 0.7. From these asymmetries and the previously published inclusive spin asymmetries we determine, for the first time, the x-dependent spin distributions for up and down valence quarks and for non-strange sea quarks. We find that the first moments of the valence quark spin distributions are Δu v = 1.01 ± 0.19 ± 0.14 and Δd v = -0.57 ± 0.22 ± 0.11. The spin distribution function of non-strange sea quarks is consistent with zero over the measured range of x and the first moment is Δū = Δd̄ = -0.02 ± 0.09 ± 0.03.

We present a new measurement of the spin-dependent structure function g 1 d of the deuteron in deep inelastic scattering of 190 GeV polarised muons on polarised deuterons, in the kinematic range 0.003 < x < 0.7 and 1 GeV 2 < Q 2 < 60 GeV 2 . This structure function is found to be negative at small x. The first moment Γ 1 d =∫ 0 1 g 1 d dx evaluated at Q 0 2 = 10 GeV 2 is 0.034 ± 0.009 (stat.) ± 0.006 (syst.). This value is below the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule prediction by three standard deviations. Using our earlier determination of Γ 1 p , we obtain Γ 1 p - Γ 1 n = 0.199 ± 0.038 which agrees with the Bjorken sum rule. © 1995.

New results on meson spectroscopy at KEK are presented. Experimental data on the reaction π - p→ηπ - p at 6.3 GeV/c have been collected by the Benkei spectrometer at the 12 GeV proton synchrotron to the aim of searching for IJ PC =11 -+ states in the ηπ - system. A marked forward-backward asymmetry of the events is observed in the Gotffired-Jackson frame of the ηπ - system. The result of the partial-wave analysis shows a clear bump of the P + wave around 1320 MeV/c 2 . Checks for the result and the analysis are discussed. © 1994 Società Italiana di Fisica.

Experimental studies of open charm production in two-photon processes have been performed. In the measurement, charmed hadrons were identified by electrons from their semi-leptonic decays. The result was compared with calculations based on the direct process and photon-gluon fusion process by resolved photons. We found that the effect of the gluon component in a photon is substantial in the observed events. © 1994 Springer-Verlag.

Data of the ηπ - system were obtained in the reaction π - p → ηπ - p at 6.3 GeV/c beam momentum. About 17 k events of ηπ - were collected in the mass range 0.8 ≤ M ηπ - ≤ 1.8 GeV/c 2 and in the range of the momentum transfer squared 0.075 ≤ |t′| ≤ 0.60 (GeV/c) 2 . A large forward-backward asymmetry was observed around 1.3 GeV/c 2 in the Gottfried-Jackson frame of the ηπ - system. A partial wave analysis of the data was performed. A peak of the D + wave attributed to a 2 (1320) is clearly seen. An enhancement is observed around 1.3 GeV/c 2 in the P + wave. © 1993.

A high-speed nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR) data-acquisition system, incorporating a personal computer, has been developed to determine the polarization of the polarized target for high-energy physics experiments. A dedicated analog-to-digital converter (ADC) board is used for automatic ADC sampling synchronizing with an internal clock. Within about 1.5 s, 128 NMR signals are obtained and the averaged signal is derived.

A further study on the ηππ system in the charge exchange reaction π - p→ηπ + π - n at 8.95 GeV/c has been performed at KEK. A partial wave analysis was done for three t′ regions, 0-0.05, 0.05-0.20 and 0.20-0.60 (GeV/c) 2 in the mass range between 1.155 and 1.555 GeV. The IJ pc =00 -+ wave via a 0 (980)π intermediate state shows clear peaks of η(1295) and η(1400) in the third t′ region. The state η(1400) shows a mass value of 1388±4 MeV. The 01 ++ wave via a 0 π shows also a clear peak of f 1 (1285) in the third t′ region. The higher mass region between 1.51 and 1.83 GeV was also studied for the same three t′ regions. No I=0 pseudoscalar state is seen in the analysis. © 1991.
