The tensor analyzing power A yy in inclusive breakup of 9 GeV/c deuterons on carbon has been measured at the detected proton angle of 85 mr. The analyzing power remains positive at the highest measured momentum of the proton in definite contradiction with the predictions of the existing models. The vector analyzing power A y has been obtained simultaneously with A yy . © 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

We present a measurement of semi-inclusive spin asymmetries for positively and negatively charged hadrons from deep inelastic scattering of polarised muons on polarised protons and deuterons in the range 0.003 < x < 0.7 and Q 2 > 1 GeV 2 . Compared to our previous publication on this subject, with the new data the statistical errors have been reduced by nearly a factor of two. From these asymmetries and our inclusive spin asymmetries we determine the polarised quark distributions of valence quarks and non-strange sea quarks at Q 2 = 10 GeV 2 . The polarised u valence quark distribution, Δu υ (×), is positive and the polarisation increases with x. The polarised d valence quark distribution, Δd υ (x), is negative and the non-strange sea distribution, Δq - (x), is consistent with zero over the measured range of x. We find for the first moments (latin small letter esh) 1 0 Δu υ (x)d x = 0.77 ± 0.10 ± 0.08, (latin small letter esh) 1 0 Δd υ (x)d x = -0.52 ± 0.14 ± 0.09 and (latin small letter esh) 1 0 Δq - (x)d x = 0.01 ± 0.04 ± 0.03, where we assumed Δu - (x) = Δd - (x). We also determine for the first time the second moments of the valence distributions (latin small letter esh) 1 0 xΔq υ (x)d x. © 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

The tensor analyzing power T 20 for the reaction d ↑ + 12 C → π ± (0°) + X has been measured with a polarized deuteron beam from 6.2 to 9.0 GeV/c at a pion momentum of 3.0 GeV/c. This experiment is focused on "cumulatively produced pions", which are produced beyond the kinematically allowed limit for free nucleon-nucleon collisions. The measured values of T 20 turn out to be close to zero. They are in disagreement with the results of our impulse approximation calculation which is based on a single NN → πNN interaction and takes into account the internal motion of nucleons in the deuteron. Possible explanations of the result are discussed. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V. PACS: 21.60.-n; 24.70.+s; 24.85.+p; 25.10.+s.

We present a new measurement of the virtual photon proton asymmetry A p 1 from deep inelastic scattering of polarized muons on polarized protons in the kinematic range 0.0008 < x < 0.7 and 0.2 < Q 2 < 100 GeV 2 . With this, the statistical uncertainty of our measurement has improved by a factor of 2 compared to our previous measurements. The spin-dependent structure function g p1 is determined for the data with Q 2 > 1 GeV 2 . A perturbative QCD evolution in next-to-leading order is used to determine g p 1 (x) at a constant Q 2 . At Q2 = 10 GeV 2 we find, in the measured range, ∫ 0.7 0.003 g p 1 (x)d x = 0.139 ± 0.006(stat) ± 0.008(syst) ± 0.006 (evol). The value of the first moment Γ p1 = ∫ 1 0 g p 1 (x)dx of g p 1 depends on the approach used to describe the behaviour of g p 1 at low x. We find that the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule is violated. With our published result for Γ d 1 we confirm the Bjorken sum rule with an accuracy of ≈ 15% at the one standard deviation level. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

An analytic model of the deuteron absorption function has been developed and is compared to experimental NMR signals of deuterated butanol obtained at the SMC experiment in order to determine the deuteron polarization. The absorption function model includes dipolar broadening and a frequency-dependent treatment of the intensity factors. The high-precision TE signal data available are used to adjust the model for Q-meter distortions and dispersion effects. Once the Q-meter adjustment is made, the enhanced polarizations determined by the asymmetry and TE-calibration methods compare well within the accuracy of each method. In analyzing the NMR signals, the quadrupolar coupling constants could be determined for both the C-D and the O-D bonds of deuterated butanol.

We present a new measurement of the spin-dependent structure function g d 1 of the deuteron from deep inelastic scattering of 190 GeV polarized muons on polarized deuterons. The results are combined with our previous measurements of g d 1 . A perturbative QCD evolution in next-to-leading order is used to compute g d 1 (x) at a constant Q 2 . At Q 2 = 10GeV 2 , we obtain a first moment Γ d 1 = ∫ 1 0 g d1 dx = 0.041 ± 0.008, a flavour-singlet axial charge of the nucleon a 0 = 0.30 ± 0.08, and an axial charge of the strange quark a s = -0.09 ± 0.03. Using our earlier determination Γ p 1 , we obtain Γ p 1 - Γ n1 = 0.183 ± 0.035 at Q 2 - 10GeV 2 . This result is in agreement with the Bjorken sum rule which predicts Γ p 1 - Γ n 1 = 0.186 ± 0.002 at the same Q 2 . © 1997 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Polarized deuteron acceleration tests were performed at the KEK-PS. There is one weak intrinsic resonance at 8 GeV. The polarization was measured by an external polarimeter at 2 GeV following two patterns. The beam was extracted after deceleration to 2 GeV from 10.2 GeV in pattern 1 and just after acceleration up to 2 GeV in pattern 2. The polarization was almost the same in the two patterns, meaning that a polarized deuteron beam has been successfully accelerated up to 10.2 GeV at the KEK-PS.

We have measured the spin-dependent structure function g p 1 in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of polarized muons off polarized protons, in the kinematic range 0.003 < × < 0.7 and 1 GeV 2 < Q 2 < 60GeV 2 . A next-to-leading order QCD analysis is used to evolve the measured g p 1 (x,Q 2 ) to a fixed Q 2 0 . The first moment of g p 1 at Q 2 0 =10 GeV 2 is Γ p 1 =0.136±0.013 (stat) ±0.009 (syst) ±0.005 (evol). This result is below the prediction of the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule by more than two standard deviations. The singlet axial charge a 0 is found to be 0.28±0.16. In the Adler-Bardeen factorization scheme, Δg≃2 is required to bring ΔΣ in agreement with the quark-parton model. A combined analysis of all available proton, deuteron, and 3 He data confirms the Bjorken sum rule.
