Differential cross sections for η photoproduction from protons have been measured at Eγ=1.6-2.4 GeV in the backward direction. A bump structure has been observed above 2.0 GeV in the total energy. No such bump is observed in η',ω, and π0 photoproductions. It is inferred that this unique structure in η photoproduction is due to a baryon resonance with a large ss̄ component that is strongly coupled to the ηN channel. © 2009 The American Physical Society.

The longitudinal polarisation transfer from muons to Λ and \bar\Λ hyperons, D LL Λ(barΛ),has been studied in deep-inelastic scattering off an unpolarised isoscalar target at the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The spin transfers to Λ and barΛ produced in the current fragmentation region exhibit different behaviours as a function of x and x F . The measured x and x F dependences of D LL Λ are compatible with zero, while D LL barΛ tends to increase with x F , reaching values of 0.4-0.5. The resulting average values are D LL Λ = -0.012±0.047±0.024 and D LL barΛ = 0.249±0.056±0.049. These results are discussed in the frame of recent model calculations. © 2009 Springer-Verlag / Società Italiana di Fisica.

We present a LO evaluation of helicity densities of valence, Δ u v + Δ d v , non-strange sea, Δ over(u, ̄) + Δ over(d, ̄), and strange quarks, Δs (assumed to be equal to Δ over(s, ̄)). They have been obtained from the inclusive asymmetry A 1, d and the semi-inclusive asymmetries A 1, d π + , A 1, d π - , A 1, d K + , A 1, d K - measured in polarised deep inelastic muon-deuteron scattering. The full deuteron statistics of COMPASS (years 2002-2004 and 2006) has been used. The data cover the range Q 2 > 1 (GeV / c) 2 and 0.004 < x < 0.3. Both non-strange densities are found to be in a good agreement with previous measurements. The distribution of Δ s (x) is compatible with zero in the whole measured range, in contrast to the shape of the strange quark helicity distribution obtained in most LO and NLO QCD fits. The sensitivity of the values of Δ s (x) upon the choice of fragmentation functions used in the derivation is discussed. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Photoproduction of Λ(1520) with liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets was examined at photon energies below 2.4GeV in the SPring-8 LEPS experiment. For the first time, the differential cross sections were measured at low energies and with a deuterium target. A large asymmetry of the production cross sections from protons and neutrons was observed at backward K+/0 angles. This suggests the importance of the contact term, which coexists with t-channel K exchange under gauge invariance. This interpretation was compatible with the differential cross sections, decay asymmetry, and photon beam asymmetry measured in the production from protons at forward K+ angles. © 2009 The American Physical Society.

The gluon polarisation in the nucleon has been determined by detecting charm production via D 0 meson decay to charged K and π in polarised muon scattering off a longitudinally polarised deuteron target. The data were taken by the COMPASS Collaboration at CERN between 2002 and 2006 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 2.8 fb -1 . The dominant underlying process of charm production is the photon-gluon fusion to a c over(c, ̄) pair. A leading order QCD approach gives an average gluon polarisation of 〈 Δ g / g 〉 x = - 0.49 ± 0.27 (stat) ± 0.11 (syst) at a scale μ 2 ≈ 13 (GeV / c) 2 and at an average gluon momentum fraction 〈 x 〉 ≈ 0.11. The longitudinal cross-section asymmetry for D 0 production is presented in bins of the transverse momentum and the energy of the D 0 meson. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries of identified hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering of 160 GeV/c muons on a transversely polarised 6 LiD target at COMPASS are presented. The results for charged pions and charged and neutral kaons correspond to all data available, which were collected from 2002 to 2004. For all final state particles both, the Collins and Sivers asymmetries turn out to be small, compatible with zero within the statistical errors, in line with the previously published results for not identified charged hadrons, and with the expected cancellation between the u- and d-quark contributions. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. The γd→K+K-pn reaction has been studied to search for the evidence of the Θ+ by detecting K+K- pairs at forward angles. The Fermi-motion-corrected nK+ invariant mass distribution shows a narrow peak at 1.524±0.002+0.003 GeV/c2. The statistical significance of the peak calculated from a shape analysis is 5.1 σ, and the differential cross section for the γn→K-Θ+ reaction is estimated to be 12±2 nb/sr in the photon energy range from 2.0 to 2.4 GeV in the LEPS angular range by assuming the isotropic production of the Θ+ in the γn center-of-mass system. The obtained results support the existence of the Θ+. © 2009 The American Physical Society.

The Σ(1385) resonance, or Σ*, is well known as part of the standard baryon decuplet with spin J=32. Measurements of the reaction γp→K+Σ*0 are difficult to extract due to overlap with the nearby Λ(1405) resonance. However, the reaction γn→K+Σ *- has no overlap with the Λ(1405) due to its charge. Here we report the first measurement of cross sections and beam asymmetries for photoproduction of the Σ*- from a deuteron target. The cross sections at forward angles range from 0.4 to 1.2μb, with a broad maximum near Eγ 1.8GeV. The beam asymmetries are negative, in contrast with positive values for the γn→K+Σ- reaction. © 2009 The American Physical Society.

The semi-inclusive difference asymmetry A h+ - h- for hadrons of opposite charge has been measured by the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The data were collected in the years 2002-2004 using a 160 GeV polarised muon beam scattered off a large polarised 6 LiD target in the kinematic range 0.006 < x < 0.7 and 1 < Q 2 < 100 (GeV / c) 2 . In leading order QCD (LO) the deuteron asymmetry A h+ - h- measures the valence quark polarisation and provides an evaluation of the first moment of Δ u v + Δ d v which is found to be equal to 0.40 ± 0.07 (stat.) ± 0.06 (syst.) over the measured range of x at Q 2 = 10 (GeV / c) 2 . When combined with the first moment of g 1 d previously measured on the same data, this result favours a non-symmetric polarisation of light quarks Δ over(u, ̄) = - Δ over(d, ̄) at a confidence level of two standard deviations, in contrast to the often assumed symmetric scenario Δ over(u, ̄) = Δ over(d, ̄) = Δ over(s, ̄) = Δ s. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Differential cross sections and decay asymmetries for coherent φ{symbol}-meson photoproduction from deuterons were measured for the first time at forward angles using linearly polarized photons at E γ = 1.5 - 2.4 GeV. This reaction offers a unique way to directly access natural-parity pomeron dynamics and gluon exchange at low energies. The cross sections at zero degrees increase with increasing photon energy. The decay asymmetries demonstrate a complete dominance of natural-parity exchange processes, showing that isovector unnatural-parity π-meson exchange is small. Nevertheless the deduced cross sections of φ{symbol}-mesons from nucleons contributed by isoscalar t-channel exchange processes are not well described by the conventional pomeron model. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Cross sections for the γp→K+Λ reaction were measured at backward angles using linearly polarized photons in the range 1.50 to 2.37 GeV. In addition, the beam asymmetry for this reaction was measured for the first time at backward angles. The Λ was detected at forward angles in the LEPS spectrometer via its decay to pπ- and the K+ was inferred using the technique of missing mass. These measurements, corresponding to kaons at far backward angles in the center-of-mass frame, complement similar CLAS data at other angles. Comparison with theoretical models shows that the reactions in these kinematics provide further opportunities to investigate the reaction mechanisms of hadron dynamics. © 2007 The American Physical Society.
