The differential cross section for the production of charged hadrons with high transverse momenta in the scattering of 160 GeV/c muons off nucleons at low photon virtualities has been measured at the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The results, which cover transverse momenta from 1.1 GeV/c to 3.6 GeV/c, are compared to a perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) calculation, in order to evaluate the applicability of pQCD to this process in the kinematic domain of the experiment. The shape of the calculated differential cross section as a function of transverse momentum is found to be in good agreement with the experimental data, but the absolute scale is underestimated by next-to-leading order pQCD. The inclusion of all-order resummation of large logarithmic threshold corrections reduces the discrepancy from a factor of 3 to 4 to a factor of 2. The dependence of the cross section on the pseudorapidity and on the virtual photon energy fraction is investigated. Finally the dependence on the charge of the hadrons is discussed. © 2013 American Physical Society.

© 2013, The Author(s). Multiplicities of charged hadrons produced in deep inelastic muon scattering off a 6 LiD target have been measured as a function of the DIS variables x Bj , Q 2 , W 2 and the final state hadron variables p T and z. The p 2 T distributions are fitted with a single exponential function at low values of p 2 T to determine the dependence of 〈p 2 T 〉 on x Bj , Q 2 , W 2 and z. The z-dependence of 〈p 2 T 〉 is shown to be a potential tool to extract the average intrinsic transverse momentum squared of partons, 〈k 2 ⊥ 〉, as a function of x Bj and Q 2 in a leading order QCD parton model.

After the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, soil collected in Fukushima Prefecture was separated into magnetic and non-magnetic parts with a magnet. Radioactivity of 134Cs and 137Cs was measured for each part. It was found that the radioactivity per weight of the magnetic part is 4 times as high as that of the non-magnetic part.

We present a determination of the gluon polarisation δg/g in the nucleon, based on the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry of DIS events with Q 2 > 1(GeV/c) 2 including a pair of large transverse-momentum hadrons in the final state. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV/c polarised muon beam scattering off a polarised LiD6 target. The gluon polarisation is evaluated by a Neural Network approach for three intervals of the gluon momentum fraction x g covering the range 0.04 < x g < 0.27. The values obtained at leading order in QCD do not show any significant dependence on x g . Their average is δg/g=0.125±0.060(stat.)±0.063(syst.) at average x g =0.09 and a scale of μ 2 =3(GeV/c) 2 . © 2012 Elsevier B.V..

First measurements of azimuthal asymmetries in hadron-pair production in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on transversely polarised 6 LiD (deuteron) and NH 3 (proton) targets are presented. The data were taken in the years 2002-2004 and 2007 with the COMPASS spectrometer using a muon beam of 160 GeV/c at the CERN SPS. The asymmetries provide access to the transversity distribution functions, without involving the Collins effect as in single hadron production. The sizeable asymmetries measured on the NH 3 target indicate non-vanishing u-quark transversity and two-hadron interference fragmentation functions. The small asymmetries measured on the 6 LiD target can be interpreted as indication for a cancellation of u- and d-quark transversities. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

Using 58 million J/Ψ decays obtained by BESII, a charged κ particle is observed in the analysis of the K S π± system recoiling against Kz.ast;(892)∓ selected in J/ψ→K S K S π+π- The mass and width values of the charged κ are obtained to be (826±49-34+49) MeV/c2 and (449±156-81+144) MeV/c2 for the Breit-Wigner parameters, and the pole position is determined to be (764±63-54+71)-i(306±149-85+143) MeV/c2. They are in good agreement with those of the neutral κ observed by the BES Collaboration. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.
