Azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive production of positive (h + ) and negative hadrons (h - ) have been measured by scattering 160 GeV muons off longitudinally polarised deuterons at CERN. The asymmetries were decomposed in several terms according to their expected modulation in the azimuthal angle φ of the outgoing hadron. Each term receives contributions from one or several spin and transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions. The amplitudes of all φ-modulation terms of the hadron asymmetries integrated over the kinematic variables are found to be consistent with zero within statistical errors, while the constant terms are nonzero and equal for h + and h - within the statistical errors. The dependencies of the φ-modulated terms versus the Bjorken momentum fraction x, the hadron fractional momentum z, and the hadron transverse momentum P T h were studied. The x dependence of the constant terms for both positive and negative hadrons is in agreement with the longitudinal double-spin hadron asymmetries, measured in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. The x dependence of the sin φ-modulation term is less pronounced than that in the corresponding HERMES data. All other dependencies of the φ-modulation amplitudes are consistent with zero within the statistical errors. © 2010 The Author(s).

Double-spin asymmetries for production of charged pions and kaons in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic muon scattering have been measured by the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The data, obtained by scattering a 160 GeV muon beam off a longitudinally polarised NH 3 target, cover a range of the Bjorken variable x between 0.004 and 0.7. A leading order evaluation of the helicity distributions for the three lightest quarks and antiquark flavours derived from these asymmetries and from our previous deuteron data is presented. The resulting values of the sea quark distributions are small and do not show any sizable dependence on x in the range of the measurements. No significant difference is observed between the strange and antistrange helicity distributions, both compatible with zero. The integrated value of the flavour asymmetry of the helicity distribution of the light-quark sea, Δū-sΔd̄, is found to be slightly positive, about 1.5 standard deviations away from zero. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.

The Collins and Sivers asymmetries for charged hadrons produced in deeply inelastic scattering on transversely polarised protons have been extracted from the data collected in 2007 with the CERN SPS muon beam tuned at 160 GeV/. c. At large values of the Bjorken x variable non-zero Collins asymmetries are observed both for positive and negative hadrons while the Sivers asymmetry for positive hadrons is slightly positive over almost all the measured x range. These results strongly support the present theoretical interpretation of these asymmetries, in terms of leading-twist quark distribution and fragmentation functions. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.

The LEPS/SPring-8 experiment made a comprehensive measurement of the spin-density matrix elements for γp→p, γd→pn, and γd→d at forward production angles. A linearly polarized photon beam at Eγ=1.6-2.4 GeV was used for the production of mesons. The natural-parity Pomeron exchange processes remain dominant near threshold. The unnatural-parity processes of pseudoscalar exchange is visible in the production from the nucleons but is greatly reduced in the coherent production from deuterons. There is no strong Eγ dependence, but there is some dependence on momentum transfer. A small but finite value of the spin-density matrix elements reflecting helicity-nonconserving amplitudes in the t-channel is observed. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

The inclusive double-spin asymmetry, A 1 p , has been measured at COMPASS in deep-inelastic polarised muon scattering off a large polarised NH 3 target. The data, collected in the year 2007, cover the range Q 2 > 1 (GeV / c) 2 , 0.004 < x < 0.7 and improve the statistical precision of g 1 p (x) by a factor of two in the region x < 0.02. The new proton asymmetries are combined with those previously published for the deuteron to extract the non-singlet spin-dependent structure function g 1 NS (x, Q 2 ). The isovector quark density, Δ q 3 (x, Q 2 ), is evaluated from a NLO QCD fit of g 1 NS . The first moment of Δ q 3 is in good agreement with the value predicted by the Bjorken sum rule and corresponds to a ratio of the axial and vector coupling constants | g A / g V | = 1.28 ± 0.07 (stat .) ± 0.10 (syst.). © 2010 Elsevier B.V. The COMPASS experiment at the CERN SPS has studied the diffractive dissociation of negative pions into the π - π - π + final state using a 190GeV/c pion beam hitting a lead target. A partial wave analysis has been performed on a sample of 420000 events taken at values of the squared 4-momentum transfer t ′ between 0.1 and 1GeV2/c2. The well-known resonances a1(1260), a2(1320), and π2(1670) are clearly observed. In addition, the data show a significant natural-parity exchange production of a resonance with spin-exotic quantum numbers JPC=1 -+ at 1.66GeV/c2 decaying to ρπ. The resonant nature of this wave is evident from the mass-dependent phase differences to the JPC=2 -+ and 1 ++ waves. From a mass-dependent fit a resonance mass of (1660±10-64+0)MeV/c2 and a width of (269±21-64+42)MeV/c2 are deduced, with an intensity of (1.7±0.2)% of the total intensity. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

Differential cross sections and photon-beam asymmetries for the γ→p→K + Λ(1520) reaction have been measured with linearly polarized photon beams at energies from the threshold to 2.4 GeV at 0.6 < cos θc.m.K < 1. A new bump structure was found at W 2.11GeV in the cross sections. The bump is not well reproduced by theoretical calculations introducing a nucleon resonance with J≤32. This result suggests that the bump might be produced by a nucleon resonance possibly with J 52 or by a new reaction process, for example, an interference effect with the φ photoproduction having a similar bump structure in the cross sections. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

We report measurements of differential cross sections and decay asymmetries of incoherent φ{symbol}-meson photoproduction from the deuteron at forward angles using linearly polarized photons at E γ = 1.5 - 2.4 GeV. The nuclear transparency ratio for the deuteron shows a large suppression, and is consistent with the A-dependence of the ratio observed in a previous measurement with nuclear targets. The reduction for the deuteron cannot be adequately explained in term of isospin asymmetry. The present results suggest the need of refining our understanding of the φ{symbol}-N interaction within a nucleus. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
